i know people like to act like bisexuals, and in this particular case: bisexual men, are exaggerating when we talk about people just straight up denying the existence of bisexuality even in the year 2020 but i promise you it’s very much a consistent and pervasive reality.

the article was republished under a new title and while i do appreciate the attempt to fix the original, i think it also helps highlight the point being made here.

even while writing about a study in which the study author said “there is no longer reasonable doubt [to the existence of bisexual men]” the title of the article still said there was. “Science suggests some men really are bisexual”. Science says maybe perhaps potentially some of the men who say they are bisexual are actually being honest.

in an article about how bisexual men are often viewed with suspicion about whether they’re truly being honest about their sexuality and the impact it has on bisexual men’s health/safety, the discussion on “confirming” their identities needed to be handled w care and it very much wasn’t.

and look, the study fuckin sucked in the first place lmaoo. they had originally 600 participants and had to cut 100 over them (over 16%), used only cis men, and the study was just testing the arousal patterns of men based on their reactions to explicit videos and photos which were then ranked onto a 7 point Kinsey scale. it was shit study written about in a shit article that does nothing to benefit the bisexual community.

failure to recognize the way suspicion around bisexual men in particular is very much rooted in bias from the AIDS crisis and the way doubt about “genuine bisexuality” is a major cause of abuse towards bisexuals (and esp bisexual women) just goes to show that this study was not published with bisexual people in mind.

it sucks that people still doubt the very existence of bisexuality. it sucks the way bisexuals are treated because of said doubt. but the solution isn’t to scientifically prove our existence. the solution is to meaningfully address the bias and bigotry that prevents people from listening and believing the first hand accounts of bisexual people.

Oh people over on SciTwitter are absolutely ripping this study a new one. Like, they measured male bisexuality based on genital arousal patterns after seeing images of *just* penises and vulvas. Nothing else. It’s the definition of a flawed study. The study literally states in the abstract that the only looked into male bisexuality because “female bisexuality does not face the same objections” and they did not even bother looking into WHY that may be.

The guys that performed the study are not new at this bullshit either and a couple years back published a study about (tw: transphobia) how transwomen are really just gay men with a sex fetish.
